Kenny Dixon Jr. is the latest in a lineage of great and enigmatic Detroit artists. His sound is among the most revolutionary in that entire constellation: a singular fusion of samples and live instrumentation, rooted in the history of soul, funk and jazz, then recontextualised within a house framework threaded with techno and unpredictable stylistic detours. Once quite literally unreachable, in recent years he has narrowed the distance just enough to bless us with DJ sets that remain rare and far between. He is one of the few artists for whom the word “legendary” does not sound like an exaggeration.
